Challengers Japan, operated by White Cube, has introduced its marketing strategy for the November Mega War ahead of the promotional event set to run from November 20 to December 2.
The Mega War is a significant quarterly discount event held on the Japanese e-commerce platform Qoo10, recognized as a key sales opportunity for K-beauty brands entering the Japanese market. The sales data from previous Mega War events suggests distinct patterns in purchasing behavior.
Data from challengers indicates that during last September’s Mega War, there was a marked difference in sales distribution across the period. The difference in sales volume between the highest-selling day and the lowest reached approximately five times, with significant sales activity concentrated on the event's opening day and the coupon expiration dates.
On the first day, sales accounted for about 19.3%, the highest of the 13-day event. Discounts were released in three separate coupons throughout the Mega War, leading to sales spikes on the expiration dates of the first and second coupons on the fifth and ninth days, respectively, where sales increased by approximately 1.7 times compared to the previous day. On the final day, sales reached 2.6 times the previous day's volume, with purchases peaking when coupons expired.
Moreover, exposure during the teaser period directly influenced subsequent sales. Products consistently ranking within the top 200 resulted in a significant presence within the top 100 sales shortly after the event commenced, indicating that pre-event exposure positively impacted early sales results.
Based on these insights, Challengers Japan proposes a five-step strategy for K-beauty brands preparing for the November Mega War, which includes identifying hero products, ensuring pre-event exposure during the teaser period, presenting compelling reasons to purchase via thumbnails, allocating advertising budgets focused on peak sales days, and designing purchase incentives on those key dates.
The strategy emphasizes the importance of coordinating marketing efforts to align with consumer purchasing behavior throughout the Mega War event. Brands are advised to concentrate product exposure and sustain awareness from the teaser stage in order to maximize sales opportunities at the event's onset.
Furthermore, it is recommended that advertising funds and consumer incentives be tailored to peak sales days rather than evenly distributed across the event duration. Challengers Japan explains that to convert consumer interest into actual sales, organic integration of product exposure, advertising execution, and purchase incentives is critical.
Choi Hyuk-jun, CEO of White Cube, emphasized, "To maximize the success of the Mega War, it is essential to secure product exposure before the event and execute campaigns aligned with peak buying moments. Challengers will continuously analyze the sales patterns of the Mega War to assist brands in being prepared at the right times for their products."
