The Korean International Trade Association (KITA), led by Chairman Yoon Jin-sik, held a seminar on the 10th at the Trade Tower in Samseong-dong, Gangnam, dedicated to 'AI Utilization in FTA and Trade Operational Support Solutions.' This initiative underscores the increasing demand for AI Transformation (AX) in the trade sector, particularly aimed at addressing the slower adoption of artificial intelligence among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) compared to larger corporations.
With over 200 export company professionals in attendance, the seminar provided practical applications of AI, ranging from customs data verification to buyer discovery and intellectual property exploration. The hands-on approach is crafted to ensure SMEs can readily implement these advanced technologies, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and market competitiveness.
The seminar featured three specialized presentations, focusing on automating overseas buyer discovery using AI agents, classification and original country determination for products, and the exploration of intellectual property information via effective prompts. This structured session not only informed but also empowered attendees with actionable insights.
Kim Duck-kyu, CEO of Abrams Wiki Korea, introduced a buyer discovery process that includes keyword design, data collection, information verification, and customs data checks to identify viable buyers. He noted, “Even if a customs record lists an importer, they may often function as merely logistics agents or intermediary firms. The key lies in clearly outlining criteria within prompts to filter for genuine buyers with actual import needs,” emphasizing the strategic importance of precise prompt engineering in AI applications.
Meanwhile, Seo Ga-hee, CEO of Federation Co., demonstrated how generative AI can be applied to essential FTA practices such as HS code classification, country-of-origin determination, and identifying export/import regulations. Additionally, Song Hyo-kyung, Team Leader at WIPS, elaborated on utilizing the Patent Information Search Service (KIPRIS) for patent searches and prior art investigations, along with practical tips for creating effective verification prompts.
KITA's Head of the FTA and Trade Support Center, Choi Jeong-sik, articulated the significance of AI as a crucial tool for enhancing productivity in trade operations for SMEs facing personnel and budget constraints. He affirmed the association's commitment to ongoing, practical AI training designed to allow businesses to automate routine tasks while focusing on core strategic functions.
This seminar signals a proactive step towards minimizing the technology adoption gap between large enterprises and SMEs, fostering a more inclusive environment for artificial intelligence utilization in the trade sector.
