The National Institute of Forest Science (NIFS) under the Korea Forest Service announced the transfer of technology utilizing Sasrepi tree extracts, which have demonstrated hair growth inhibition effects, to private enterprises. This initiative aims to drive the commercialization of related products.
Sasrepi trees, typically found along Korea's coastal areas, are evergreen broadleaf trees known for their skin-soothing, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. The Forest Bio-Materials Research Institute of NIFS discovered that extracts from these trees inhibit the activity of dermal papilla cells, which are critical in regulating hair growth and cycles.
To validate the impact of Sasrepi tree extracts on actual hair growth, a 12-week human application study was conducted with 22 adult participants. Results indicated that the hair density in the treatment group decreased by 15.1% after four weeks, 19.7% after eight weeks, and 17.8% after twelve weeks. Furthermore, hair thickness reduced by 19.8%, 26.1%, and 39.6% at the same intervals, respectively. Notably, the increase in hair length was also inhibited, clearly showcasing the potential for Sasrepi extracts in depilatory products.
As part of this effort, NIFS showcased the technology at the 2026 Interbiz Bio Partnering & Investment Forum and signed a technology transfer agreement with the cosmetic company Pure Gene Co., Ltd. Development of products utilizing Sasrepi tree extracts is currently underway.
Dr. Choi Sik-won from the Forest Bio-Materials Research Institute remarked, "This technology transfer will enhance the utilization of indigenous Sasrepi trees and stimulate the related industry. We will continue endeavors to ensure a steady supply of raw materials through propagation research, along with advancing beauty materials to benefit the farming community and citizens from national R&D outcomes."
