Amorepacific has identified the potential of its proprietary microbiome strain, Bacillus velezensis AmoreLumina, in improving post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne. This research was published in the online edition of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in August.

Acne induces inflammation that leaves red marks on the skin, which can lead to pigmentation or scarring even after the inflammation has subsided. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common concern for those who have experienced acne. Existing pigmentation management technologies have primarily focused on inhibiting melanin synthesis, which has limitations in effectively addressing pigment accumulation in dermal and epidermal layers.

To overcome these limitations, Amorepacific researchers have focused on the persistence of melanin in the skin. They propose a new approach that not only inhibits melanin production but also considers the removal of residual melanin from the skin.

The study highlights the metabolic characteristics of Bacillus velezensis AmoreLumina, which can produce high concentrations of the natural functional substance Moranoline. The findings indicate that the Moranoline-rich culture extract inhibits the expression of melanin-producing enzymes, which are increased by acne-related irritation while activating the autophagy and lysosomal degradation pathways in macrophages that have absorbed melanin.

This research presents a dual-action mechanism that suggests improved pigmentation outcomes by simultaneously inhibiting new pigment formation and promoting the breakdown of existing residual pigments. An ex-vivo study using human skin tissue also confirmed a significant reduction in pigmentation induced by acne-causing bacteria and ultraviolet light following treatment with the AmoreLumina culture extract.

Seobyeong Hwi, CTO of Amorepacific's R&I Center, stated that the company focuses on understanding the root causes and processes of skin changes, rather than just alleviating visible symptoms. This research is significant as it broadens the scope of skin recovery studies by examining not only the problem of melanin production but also the process of how produced melanin persists in the skin.
