The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), led by Commissioner Oh Yu-kyung, is set to host a meeting on September 18 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the National Assembly Hall. This gathering aims to explore rational labeling methods for the expiration dates of nail polish cosmetics.
Hosted by National Assembly members Oh Se-hee and Jeon Jin-sook, the meeting will include representatives from the Korean Nail Association and cosmetic manufacturers, among others.
With the rising trend of consumers expressing individuality through nail art, the consumption of nail polish products has increased. However, industry voices have raised concerns regarding the relatively short shelf life of these products, leading to challenges in waste disposal and inventory management. The production performance of nail products is projected to rise from 52.9 billion in 2024 to 58.2 billion in 2025.
During the discussion, stakeholders will freely exchange views on potential improvements to labeling systems that could alleviate product disposal and inventory burdens related to nail polish products. Additionally, international regulatory trends and suggestions from cosmetic manufacturers regarding expiration date labeling will be openly discussed, providing a comprehensive insight into the current landscape.
The MFDS anticipates that this meeting will serve as a platform for sharing industry challenges and devising rational labeling solutions. They also emphasize their ongoing commitment to improving regulations through active communication with the industry, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of domestic enterprises.
