UCL, an ODM and OEM specialist in cosmetics, has presented insights into the next generation of sun care in its '2027 Sun Care Trend Book.' This report emphasizes a shift in sun care from seasonal products to essentials in everyday skincare routines, highlighting functionalities such as moisturizing and skin barrier support while minimizing stickiness and white cast.

According to the global market research firm Mintel, the proportion of new sun care products in Asia associated with skin barrier claims rose from 11% in 2021-2022 to 34% in 2025-2026. This illustrates a growing consumer expectation for multifunctionality in products.

The evolution of formulations is notable as well. Initially dominated by creams and lotions, the market is diversifying into serums, sticks, mists, and cushions, catering to various usage contexts. In Europe, the low-stickiness formulations are increasingly driving purchase decisions, reflecting a desire for portable and easy-to-reapply formats.

In line with this trend, UCL has introduced products such as the 'Fresh Fit Sun Toner,' designed for initial skincare application, and the 'Barrier Essence Drop,' which adheres closely to the skin like a moisturizing essence. These innovations blur the lines between skincare and sun protection.

Additionally, a focus on ultra-lightweight formulations has been strengthened. The 'Vapor-Touch Sun Fluid' employs a multi-phase structure to provide a thin and even application, ensuring hydration while achieving a matte finish. The 'Emulguard Bubble Sun' features a bubble texture that disperses lightly upon contact with skin, designed to offer cooling and hydration even in hot conditions.

UCL is also addressing the global market, particularly in the U.S. where sun care is regulated as an OTC product. The company is proposing formulations that align with U.S. standards, thus expanding product development options for global clients.

Looking forward, a blending of sun care and makeup is anticipated, with offerings like the 'Clear Fit Water Gel Sunscreen' smoothing skin texture pre-makeup and color-correcting sticks designed for touch-ups while providing UV protection. This hybrid format accommodates both sun blocking and makeup touch-ups in a single product.

Furthermore, the application scope of sun care products is broadening beyond the face. UCL is suggesting daily UV solutions such as the 'UV Guard Sun Mist' infused with panthenol and microbiome-focused ingredients, along with mist formulations that emphasize cooling effects, ideal for outdoor activities and on-the-go reapplication.

An UCL representative stated, “The future of sun care will prioritize comfort and convenience for daily use rather than merely high SPF ratings. We will support our clients in developing innovative sun care products that combine skincare functions with differentiating textures and versatile formats.”
