Korean consumer goods exports are increasingly diversifying into character goods and design stationery as K-Beauty, K-Food, and content continue to gain traction globally. This effort is aimed at core markets including the United States and China.
The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), led by President Kang Kyung-sung, has hosted the "Xiaomang Character IP Sourcing Day" in September, inviting executives and purchasers from XIAOMANG, a Chinese e-commerce platform with 200 million users. Following this, KOTRA has initiated strategies targeting the North American market in October.
In partnership with ARTBOX, a distribution network known for character goods and novelty items, KOTRA conducted a showcase marketing featuring the "ARTBOX Pop-up Store" in Los Angeles' Melrose Avenue from October 3 to 9. This initiative was supported by 34 small and medium-sized enterprises and organized as part of the "Support Program for Overseas Expansion of Distribution Businesses" by the Ministry of Industry and KOTRA.
Melrose Avenue is a renowned destination for MZ generation and global tourists, noted for local landmarks such as Paul Smith's "Pink Wall." The event's theme, "UNBOX THE FUN, ARTBOX," included various experiential marketing efforts, such as diary decorating and photo booths, filled with Korean elements, which attracted significant interest. Local residents lined up on the opening day to enjoy K-Culture, further fueled by a visit from ARTBOX's global ambassador, artist ILLIT. It is expected that over 4,000 consumers, vendors, and buyers will visit the event during its nine-day span.
A local consumer expressed enthusiasm about the experience, stating, "It was fascinating to see and experience Korean character and design products all in one place." They noted the impressive individuality in design and product variety.
According to KOTRA's Los Angeles trade office, the U.S. consumer market is seeing growth in experience-based consumption, characterized by firsthand product trials and online sharing, as well as an expanding collectible market focused on character-based items. Smaller goods, such as keychains and blind boxes, serve as personal expressions of taste, prompting offline stores to emphasize product and brand experiences.
KOTRA plans to leverage consumer responses and purchasing data gathered from the pop-up store to lead to further diversification of new consumer goods exports, particularly K-character products.
An ARTBOX official indicated that the slogan "UNBOX THE FUN, ARTBOX" reflects a global campaign designed to help overseas customers discover new enjoyment through ARTBOX. The aim is to share the joy of ARTBOX and K-character products with American consumers and foster their expansion.
KOTRA Vice President Kim Myung-hee commented, "Amid the global surge in K-Food and K-Beauty, K-character goods and design products are also gaining popularity. We will strengthen our overseas collaborations with local distribution channels and expand pop-up marketing that reflects local consumer trends to diversify K-consumer goods exports."
